August 1999: Several planes, layovers, coffees, magazines, and cat naps later, the plane I was on started to make its descent into Cairo, Egypt. The pilot announced that we would be passing over the Great Pyramids of Giza. The passengers on the plane craned their heads left and right as the pilot circled these majestic entities that appeared, as if from nowhere, out of the vast desert landscape. There they were: three pyramids that seemed to glow from within as they jutted out against the backdrop of the dark night. The foreigners, myself included, and natives alike looked on in awe; as if contemplating these monumental markers of their great history.
As soon as the plane touched down and began bumping down the tarmac, the passengers on board also began hopping in and out of their seats as they gathered their luggage. The airline attendants looked on as if experience had taught them that protesting would be pointless.
